Step Fowrard Foundation - Driving Local Change in Eastern Serbia

How was the Iskorak Foundation created?

The Step Forward (Iskorak) Foundation was established by the citizens’ association “Zaječar Initiative” in February 2013, with a clear mission—to contribute to the development of communities in the Timok region through the advancement of local philanthropy. As early as 2007, the Zaječar Initiative launched its first grant program called “Iskorak.” With over 160 supported local projects and investments exceeding $250,000, it became clear that such programs significantly contributed to positive change in the community.

Recognizing the need for long-term investments and more active use of local resources, the Zaječar Initiative introduced the community foundation model for local development in 2008. Five years later, in 2013, the Iskorak Foundation was officially established—the first community foundation in Serbia.

What is a community foundation?

Community foundations are independent philanthropic organizations operating within a specific geographic area - such as a city, municipality, or region - intending to improve the quality of life for its citizens. Their strength lies in connecting donors, citizens, and organizations to address key local challenges collectively.

Since its founding, the Iskorak Foundation has pursued this mission by:

  • Mobilizing local resources—engaging citizens to invest their time, knowledge, and resources for the common good;
  • Fundraising beyond the local community—gaining support from international donors, development agencies, and companies;
  • Providing grants—through open calls for local projects that tackle specific community issues;
  • Strengthening social capital—rebuilding trust and encouraging solidarity among people.

The Foundation’s Contribution to the Community

Over the years, the Iskorak Foundation has led numerous initiatives that have made a lasting impact on the quality of life in the Timok region. Among the most notable are:

  • Walkathon for the Community – Organized in 2015 and 2016, these community walks and races gathered over 200 runners and 150 volunteers to raise funds. The money went toward restoring six public fountains and building gazebos in the Paviljon picnic area in the Kraljevica forest park.
  • Solidarity Day – An initiative that brought together high school students and local entrepreneurs. Students worked a day at local businesses and donated their earnings to a community cause of their choosing. The funds were used to build four gazebos in Kraljevica forest park—demonstrating the power of unity and youth-driven philanthropy.
  • Community Emergency Relief Fund – A unique fund created to respond to urgent needs of the most vulnerable citizens, including child and youth medical treatments, support for those living in extreme poverty, and assistance during natural disasters. Funds are raised through donations from citizens, local businesses, and charity events. Donation boxes are placed in some of the city’s busiest venues. The Impact and Future of the Iskorak Foundation

Over the years, the Iskorak Foundation has transformed how people in the region perceive philanthropy—more and more citizens participate in donations and community actions. The organization also actively supports younger NGOs by offering experience and mentorship.

At a time when local initiatives are essential for community development, the Iskorak Foundation remains committed to its mission—connecting people and resources to create a better future for the Timok region. Every donation, big or small, is part of the greater change we are building together.
